‘American Santa’ First Look: In Oscar-Contending Documentary, Black Santas Spread Joy, Feel Racist Backlash

On Saturday, December 16th, Executive Producers Billy Porter and D.J. Gugenheim joined JONATHAN CAPEHART on MSNBC to discuss "American Santa."

The Los Angeles News says AMERICAN SANTA is “an engaging, heart-throbbing insight into how racism affects America.”

"Superheroes don't always wear capes, sometimes it's a red suit on Christmas." - Prairie Miller, host of Arts Express on WBAI Radio.

"I have been called [the n-word] more in the last eleven years doing Black Santa than I did growing up in the South my entire life,” Stafford shared, revealing the adversities he faces. Yet, it’s these challenges that fuel his determination: “It makes me want to find more Santas.”

The Grio has included American Santa as one of their five must-watch documentaries right now!

American Santa has been selected as one of the fifteen short films in the DocNYC Shortlist shorts program! This section within DOC NYC, the largest documentary festival in the U.S., was launched in 2012 and has become a key indicator and predictor for the Academy Awards.
